Here it is mid-June, and kids are playing in the fountain spray at the corner of 8th and High, the splashpad in Sullivan Square is busy all day, and the Pool has turned into The Social Scene for anyone under 18 (and a few of us considerably over). Baker Campus is quiet, serene, and largely deserted in the middle of town, and baseball is ramping up for the season.
Events & happenings
Citywide Cleanup
Happening tomorrow morning from 8am-2pm, out at Public Works at 1015 Orange Street. Anyone with a Baldwin City address is welcome to bring everything you need to dispose of, from tree limbs to appliances. Note the things we won’t accept:
Hazardous waste
Paint
Motor oil
Construction material
Spray cans
ABSOLUTELY NO TIRES!
Sorry, but we have to put ABSOLUTELY NO TIRES! in all caps with an exclamation point every single time. Partly because it’s fun but mostly because we really need people to not bring tires so we don’t get in trouble with the EPA.
Touch a Truck — Library Summer Reading Program Kickoff Event
Get downtown tomorrow from 11am-1pm and get a chance to get close to fire trucks, a police cruiser, two electric line trucks, and the giant engines in the downtown power plant! There are some goodies for the kids (including bicycle helmets from the fire department and bicycle lights at the power plant) and plenty of fun for everyone.
Farmers & Makers Market
The Farmers & Makers Market will return for four performances this season, after its expectation-smashing debut last summer. Dovetailing with the Lumberyard’s Live on High series and 3rd Friday Art Walks, come on downtown the third Fridays of June, July, August, and September for home grown and home made goodness in a vibrant and energetic setting. Live music, local vendors, and raffles to benefit Baldwin Main Street are all part of the show.
June Summer Concert
Saturday, June 18th, beginning at 5:30pm, the City, Rec, and Chamber present a concert in Sullivan Square. While on The Voice, Blake Shelton said of Casi Joy, "She has this electric energy when she's on stage and has these unique things that she can do vocally. She's an edgier version of a country artist. She's old school but has a youthful energy about her. There's no stopping Casi Joy." Jarrod Turner is opening the show at 6:30, and food and drink will be available at 5:30pm.
Trails, Tales and Structures: The Stories of Douglas County Heritage
The Douglas County Heritage Conservation Council is hosting a Preservation Conference, “Trails, Tales and Structures: The Stories of Douglas County Heritage,” June 24-25 in Baldwin City.
There will be site tours of historic landmarks on the first day and then panel discussions and interactive sessions about heritage and preservation on the second day.
The conference is free and open to the public.
Independence Day Celebration
Saturday, July 2nd, the Rec Commission has planned an Independence Day Bash at the Golf Course, beginning around 4:30pm. Live music, food trucks, kids’ zone, and of course, the show stopping fireworks over Baldwin!
